**PLEASE NOTE – THIS IS THE JEWISH HISTORY/WWII TOUR THAT WAS ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED FOR APRIL 2017**

It has been over 70 years since then end of WWII. Germany and all of Europe has taken great care to reckon with the tragedy on both sides of the war. A large part of that reckoning is honoring the importance of the Jewish culture in Germany. Jewish residence in the Stuttgart area dates back at least to the 1300s, if not earlier. Esslingen in particular was a free imperial city which is a city controlled not by the local counts and dukes, but directly by the Holy Roman Emperor. Due to this imperial city designation, there was almost always a larger Jewish population in Esslingen than in other capitals. Because of this, there are far more remaining traces of medieval Jewish life in Esslingen than in any other part of the Stuttgart region.

In remembrance and celebration of this local Jewish influence, the IWCS has chosen to host a free 90-minute tour of WWII/Jewish history tour throughout Esslingen (English-language). This fascinating walk will be led by a local historian Dr. Gudrun Silversahn-Jant. Sites visited will include the new Jewish cemetery, Hafenmarkt, Kinderheim, synagogue (from the outside), Judengasse, and other important memorials throughout Esslingen.

We will meet in Esslingen’s town square in front of the town hall (the building with the stunning clock) at 12:45 on October 8th. Given the importance of this tour, the club will be sponsoring the full tour fee (€14 per person) for members and one guest each. This is a walking tour with no stairs, which means that bringing children and strollers should not be a problem. To hold the event we need at least 12 people confirmed no later than October 1st.

This is a +1 event, which means:

  • Any IWCS member plus one guest are welcome to attend.
  • Your +1 can be a family member or friend.

To reserve your spot, please RSVP using the form below or respond in the pending Facebook event.
